An urban renewal apartment building in Caddebostan. As required by the floor-area sharing agreement, consoles drawn from "muqarnas" geometry begin at the eleventh floor and give the top of the building a character of its own.

With a sea view along the perspective of Göztepe Park and the street, the building holds three apartments per floor and follows a triangular scheme in plan. The floor-area sharing agreement made it necessary for the building to grow step by step on every floor from the eleventh upwards. To work through that constraint we took our cue from "muqarnas" geometry. While the owners’ apartments look out on perspectives that shift from floor to floor, the wide isosceles triangles forming on the facade from the first floor upwards in fact prepare the ground for the "muqarnas" consoles at the eleventh. The rhombic consoles then shift by one room per floor, adding up to a total consistent with the floor-area sharing agreement.

The facade is clad in terracotta clinker panels, handled as a single monolithic surface. Without concealing the building’s own shell, we judged that a facade of one character would present this geometry to better effect. The triangular form also moves the building a little further from the neighbour to the south, which sits on the setback line. The bedrooms on that facade therefore look onto the street and the park behind it rather than onto the neighbouring building.
