Published by Arch Network, Surreal — Building, Real Estate, Design and Architecture Magazine’s January 2023 issue (no. 28) featured the views of BFTA Mimarlık founding partner Fuat Taşkıranoğlu as part of the magazine’s feature on transformation in architecture. In the piece titled “A greener and more sustainable architecture”, Taşkıranoğlu assessed the themes he expects to shape architectural practice in 2023.

Taşkıranoğlu noted that, owing to the major fluctuations in the economy, the declining private-sector supply of medium and large-scale housing will determine the content of the branded projects brought to market. He added that the shrinking supply of developable land within the city has increased the supply of relatively more upscale housing outside or on the edge of the city, and that this increase will continue through 2023.

“The expectations and the awareness of potential homebuyers, together with the regulatory changes and the demands of local authorities that follow from them, will draw us towards a greener and more sustainable understanding of architecture. In this sense we will gradually see concepts we are less familiar with in Turkey appear more often in projects — the use of recycled materials in construction, and locality in material selection. In our own projects we want to interpret stone textures and timber surfaces in original ways within low-density architecture. This approach will make itself visible not only in architecture but also in landscape design, through plant selections that need less irrigation, fewer ornamental pools, bio-pools and green roofs. I also think we will see more interiors that mix industrial, post-modern and kitsch, and I am looking forward to it.”

Taşkıranoğlu also took part in Arch Network’s “We Asked Architects” video series during the same period; that interview is available separately in our archive.
